In this dynamic studio course, dancers become architects of space and storytellers of power - working with the most ordinary stage partner: the chair. Inspired by a rich archive of Contemporary Dance performances, from Pina Bausch to FKA twigs, we will reimagine the familiar game of musical chairs. Through collaborative devising, we will create a choreographic playground to explore concepts of belonging. Who gets a seat? Who's left standing? How do we shift the balance of inclusion and exclusion? The Chocolate Heads Movement Band emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and cooperation. Students will generate and refine dance material together, alongside object manipulation, live vocals, and DJ accompaniment. The project will culminate in an immersive, participatory work, where dancers, chairs, and audience members are active agents in a shifting, communal dance. Expect to move, think, sing, dance, and play. Chocolate Heads is seeking dancers, athletes, and martial artists from all styles and levels of experience, as well as creators from other disciplines, such as writers, singers, and visual artists. The Audition Workshop & Introduction to the Project will be during class on Tuesday, September 23rd. Attendance is mandatory during Week 1. Contact Artistic Director, Aleta Hayes, for permission after Week 1 (ahayes1 [at] stanford.edu (ahayes1[at]stanford[dot]edu)).
