In this course, we will explore the practice (performance), theory, and study (research) in the Arts with a focus on Black cultural production in the United States, yet through a Diasporic lens. Our exploration will consider significant readings, class discussion, performance, and invited guests who are experts in their field of study/performance. Some of our core areas of study during this course will be: Performance Theory; Musical Aesthetics; Choreographing Blackness (dance); Black Life in Scene (Theater/film); Visual Arts; Interdisciplinary Improvisation; and Experimentalism. Students will gain a robust understanding of and engagement with the multitudinous approaches to creating and theorizing through the Arts and Black cultural production.
