1. Core Requirements — 10 Units

All DAAAS minors complete:

  • Introduction to Black Studies — 5 units
  • One Foundations course — 5 units
    • Foundations of African Studies, or
    • African American Studies

2. Breadth Requirements — 10 Units

Complete at least two courses for a minimum of 10 units  that develop geographic and methodological breadth in African and African American Studies:

  • Creative Practice — 5 units
  • One geographic-focus course — 5 units
    • Africa-focused, or
    • Americas-focused

Guideline: 

  • At least one of the two Breadth courses must be a DAAAS course.

3. Thematic Depth Pathway — 15 Units

Complete at least three courses for a minimum of 15 units in one of the following pathways:

  • Cultures and Arts
  • Science, Technology, and Society (STS)
  • Ethical, Social, and Political Thought

Guidelines:

  • At least two of the three courses must be DAAAS courses.
  • One course may be taken outside DAAAS with approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS).
  • Select courses from the department’s approved pathway menus.
